YouTube Content ID for Artists: What It Is and How to Earn from Other People's Videos
Thousands of videos with music are uploaded to YouTube every day: vlogs, reviews, edits, dances. If your track plays in them, you can earn part of the ad revenue — even when someone else uploaded the video. That's what Content ID is for.
What Content ID is
Content ID is YouTube's system that compares every uploaded video against a database of reference files. When it finds a match with your track, it automatically places a claim on the video on behalf of the rights holder.
Artists can't add music to Content ID directly — it's done through a distributor or label with access to the system. In SONOMUSE, Content ID is enabled for a release in the dashboard.
What happens on a match
Monetize — ads run on the video and part of the revenue goes to the music's rights holder. This is the default for most artists.
Track — the video stays as is, and you see stats on where and how often your track is used.
Block — the video becomes unavailable. Rarely used, for example for unreleased material leaked before launch.
Which tracks are eligible
Only tracks you hold exclusive rights to. Content ID isn't suitable if the track contains:
— beats bought under a non-exclusive license (other artists bought them too);
— samples and loops from public libraries;
— covers, remixes or other people's material without the rights holder's permission;
— public domain music.
If you enable such a track, the system will claim other people's legitimate videos, which leads to disputes and can get the release removed from Content ID.
How to avoid claims on your own channel
If you upload music videos or live performances to your own YouTube channel, Content ID may claim them too. To prevent that, send your channel link to your distributor so it can be allowlisted. You can do the same for partner and creator channels you've allowed to use the track.
Disputes
A video's creator can dispute a claim if they believe they're using the music legally. The rights holder reviews the dispute. Respond honestly: if the person has a license or permission, release the claim.
Summary
Content ID turns every video with your music into a source of revenue and stats. Enable it only for tracks with exclusive rights, allowlist your own channels — and YouTube starts working for you. In SONOMUSE, Content ID is available right in the dashboard alongside delivery to 450+ platforms.
